This project was the last one I undertook during my tenure as a university student; it was of course, the big one, the Final Major Project – the brief was relatively broad and could be about anything we wanted.
This project was the last one I undertook during my tenure as a university student; it was of course, the big one, the Final Major Project – the brief was relatively broad and could be about anything we wanted. As the project was set to last the length and breadth of a year, this obviously meant that the subject of the project had to be based on something that I could do a lot of in depth research on and create a vast amount of practical design work that kept me engaged with the project, and more importantly, would allow me to showcase my skills as a designer. This project would work as a way to show everything I had learnt throughout my years at university, and how far I had come as a designer in one single project.
The subject I had chosen for my project was about marajuana, and more specifically, the argument towards legalising the plant in the United Kingdom: it was a subject that had always interested me, and one that over the years I had naturally acquired a lot of information about. It was quite a hot topic at the time too, with Canada very recently legalising it, as well as a few states in the US following suit.
I researched into the origin of it being made illegal in the UK in the first place, and wondered on what might happen if it was made legal based on what had happened in other countries that had the plant legalised or decriminalised. I presented my research and stated my case on why I believed it should be legalised in the book I produced – the book was bound together with hemp material. Accompanying my book, was a prototype for a NHS branded ‘Grow Your Own Weed Kit’; the idea being that once weed is legalised it could be used for medical reasons, so I made physical concept designs as well as an animation that could be used for patients to grow their own weed at home.
